Washington, DC
- Saturday, August 18, 2012 will mark a significant date in both
Washington, DC and music history as more than ten (10) bands take the
state at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center for an all day
tribute to the recently deceased Godfather of Go Go and Washington, DC
icon, Chuck Brown, just days before what would have been his 76th birthday. Just
two (2) months ago, thousands of people including celebrities,
government officials, media outlets, band member of the Go Go community
and fans alike came to this very venue to pay their respects to Chuck
Brown at his funeral, one of the biggest in Washington, DC to date.
Chuck
Brown Day, which begins at 3:00pm, will feature old and new Go Go band
performances with partial proceeds going to The Chuck Brown Foundation, a
non-profit formed to continue work that Brown felt passionate about;
Education, Homelessness and Reentry into society after incarceration. An event of this magnitude hasn't occurred since Go Go LIVE at the Capital Centre in 1987. This
monumental red carpet event is designed to attract people from both
inside and across the borders of DC, as well as generational lines, to
witness this official Chuck Brown Day tribute to the Godfather of Go Go
and the genre that has been the musical heartbeat of Washington, DC for
more than 40 years spanning generations of fans. Although
the genre of music generally has little to no familiarity outside of the
DMV (DC|MD|VA) area, Go Go continues to evolve and is being recognized
and sampled more today by national and international artists.
The
Lifestyle Empowerment Symposium presents Chuck Brown Day hosted by
R&B crooner Christopher Williams and Chuck Brown's daughter, KK. Performances
include EU featuring Sugar Bear, The Original Soul Searchers, Suttle
Thought, Trouble Funk, Junkyard, Backyard, Ayre Rayde, India Arie,
Dwele, Calvin Richardson and other special surprise guests. This
will be the first time The Original Soul Searchers, the band that put
Chuck Brown and Go Go music on the map with hits like "Bustin' Loose"
and "We Need Some Money," and other bands have performed together in
years. This show is for all music lovers to mark on the
calendar. There will also be performances to pay homage to the fallen Go
Go soldiers. Performances just added include Hot Cold
Sweat, Ms. Yendy & the Affiliated Project, VYBE Band, DC's own
songstress Reesa Renee as well as the WHAT BAND with more acts to be
announced! "It's going to be a BLACK OUT in the city," says Tubb of Tubb Entertainment, one of the sponsors of the event. There
is no other event to attend August 18. Chuck Brown Day is the only
destination for all ages, young and old, to come together for one
purpose, Chuck Brown.
