DMV Radio x DMV Music x DMV Artist

After a quick Twitter convo and hearing the WKYS mocking of Wale I said hummmmmm. WOW! Then I hear Dj Quicksilva song "Where they do that At" on the radio and a said Hummmmm AGAIN! I personally thought the Wale commerical was funny but then again I was like why would RADIO do that to one of the signed DMV RAP artist? I just was in bad taste period and that not saying he did or didn't deserve it but DAMN what a tasteless shot. Then someone made the comment to me why don't Quicksilva and the radio push DMV artist songs like they pushing that "Where they do that at" song?

Well these types of issues are subjective to the people that are looking and listening but I will say this 1.) Karma is a Yitch and 2.) The people with influence use their influence for themselves and their personal agendas (and its nothing wrong with that.......sometimes lol).

Its not personal is business in "most" cases.

SOME THINGS WILL NEVER CHANGE. IT WAS THIS WAY 8 YEARS AGO AND UNFORTUNATELY ITS GOING TO CONTINUE TO BE LIKE THIS!

THis is oh so true....i get upset everytime i hear that dumbass quicksilva record...then i hear the other djs give artists all these excuses for not playing there records...shit is pathetic...karma is a bitch and thats prolly whats happening wit the homey...at the end of the day dmv needs to "goon out"...it works in other cities..beeleeee dat

I posted this on twitter a few weeks back and i will say it again. B-more DJ's don't belong on DMV radio!!! No dis to B-more, but I don't agree with it.

Shit is treason. Our artists are getting national press and supported by the DJ's in the area that count. That commercial is someone with a personal agenda using their influence for negative press. It's a bitter attempt at shunning someone that is successful and creating attention for the rest of us.

Let's move on.

havent listened to 93 or 95 since cee-lo did the drive home mix... they dont cater to hip-hop heads. find your own lane. shouts to the cats at 89.3 wpfw from 10-11 every weeknight puttin down hip-hop in our area. shouts to p-stew for his 2am show playin hip-hop and supportin "locals goin national"

@j_scrilla_dmv

ps- it WOULD be nice to listen to our local "hip-hop" stations but truth is we and most markets dont have "hip-hop" radio. its "urban radio" that caters to the youth and working females

good post judah. I've been to tons of these "conferences" and they be givin local artists the run around about radio play, but Quicksilver track spins, 2 face diss joint spun, gogo spins whenever they feel like playin it, anybody from a popular gogo band that decides to go solo gets spins. In order to even get a PIECE of ur song played on radio u gon have to know or have ties with someone. smh. I drove from naylor rd station to that 7-11 by Carriage Hill and i heard drake 4 times between both stations!!! None of the dmv artists are lookin to radio anymore for help, we see thru it!!! Thats why i said we need more DJ's OUTSIDE of radio. more mixtape dj's for example.

I said it on twitter I will say it here..DJ Quicksilver and AngieAng, are puppets hanging from strings..Dancing like they in Black Face. It's all about whats in with them, vip parties, perks and celeb pictures. They dont represent the city...Dont think Don Juan just got on the radio cause he got signed or cause of Lookie Looky, shoutouts to his management team, but we was pushing that shit a year ago I sent it to DJ Heat and Dj Quicksilver (Of course Dj Heat showed love) Don Juan had DiggiWaxx going crazy over 700 DJ's downloaded it within a day. Dont think Payola isnt involved in alot of this music being played on air (not talking about in the am)..You never see certain personalities at open mics, involved in any of the hiphop events.Shoutouts to P Stew, Dj Heat, Flexx, Rane, Ill Will, Big G, and Dj Alizay >>>These are all ppl who regardless of fights with program directors to play local music have showed there support and faces... my advice to artist: no matter what anybody tells u need money to play this game (and its been like since the start). Money changes alot.. Be a business man before a artist..

I mean every word so if u reading this Quicksilver u should hang ur self for making that wack ass record and actually pushing it (email blast etc)Your a Dj you should know whats wack..Funny how u got that on air so quickly...You making us look real bad especially since DJ Class record is the shit...stick to 5linx. Angie Ang dont forget who voted ur azz in.With gr8 power much is expected , Step your music game up, get out of V.I.P. and come back to the streets.

If you going listen to local radio listen to WPGC 95.5 has been supporting local artist for years and thats without the majors so support them back...
Jam Session 3 be there

Now that I'm on a computer I can write a full essay....

BS like this has been happening FOREVER. You chat up your average radio personality and they'll continue to lie to you IN YOUR FACE with lines like (and I know you ALL heard em before):

1. You gotta have buzz in the club before we can play your record (what buzz did that song have in any club?)

2. You gotta have people that request a song before we can debut any song on the radio (who requested that, and how does a world premiere song from ANYONE already have requests when nobody has heard it?)

3. It's not in a fat jewel case with a bar code and holographic cover in 14 point arial text double spaced liner notes lol

ALL BS!!

There are 2 ways to get on the radio:

1. Politics and/or
2. Payola

This USED TO be a real hot button issue for me because as late as 2006, your average idiot walking the streets of the DMV truly believed that radio stations picked the best songs and played them - that was the sole criteria. There were 2 local artist getting plays and people swore up and down there were only 2 talented rappers in the DMV.

Thanks to the radio undermining THEIR OWN credibility with endless shuffles of Gucci Mane, Drake, Gucci, Drake, Gucci, Drake, Gucci, Drake, they've taken their believers and ran THEM away.

Radio has zero credibility. Now in 2009 I'm more apt to hear somebody say they either

1. Don't listen to the radio
2. Have XM radio
3. Listen only to their ipod

If your name ain't DJ Heat and you work for a radio station, I don't wanna hear nothing you have to say lol

dont be suprised by ANY of the POLITRICS that goes on in this city. RADIO OR NOT. this city's "music" scene is SOLELY based on WHO YOU KNOW and not ur talent.

cities like atlanta, la, chicago, miami and even baltimore have been "gettin on" because of their INTERNAL (LOCAL) support.. whether thru radio, the internet, the newspaper or etc.. local support by these outlets open up the market for the local artist and also givs them room to progress as a WHOLE. DC is all about POLITICS and no one wants to really do it for THE TEAM, but on the otherhand wanna be the STAR.

so fuck the radio and all the ppl that support these toms by attending their "video shoots," parties, skewed interviews, and w/e else they wanna feed our people.

karma is mos def a bitch and real music will return with such a force that these ppl will never work in the industry again.

DC LETS GET IT!!!
BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY!

WKYS is a owned by Radio One

Wale is signed to Roc Nation which is a subsidiary of Live Nation which essentially makes him a Clear Channel brand.

Clear Channel is a Radio Competitor in multiple markets.

Does that explain why WKYS is going out of their way to dis Wale?

UPSET THE SETUP.
FUCK LOCAL RADIO!
(except for WPFW and WCPR)

I feel both sides...I used to work for a radio station in another city and I saw the struggle between djs who wanted to play other things and being shut down by program directors...The fact is although its a hip hop station, they are commercial and are told to focus on whats on the charts...If its not on the charts...It has to be similar....(I'm not defending or recommending this...shoot I keep a rack of cds in my car lol and could never be a radio dj...I get tired of the same 10 songs over and over)...Truth is they aren't just leaving out talented dmv artists though..they're also leaving out talented artists from across the country that make real hip hop music...J.Cole, Krs-One, Buckshot, Raekwon, and much more...Its like I Got It for Free said..you gotta be a business man...Those djs are trying to keep their jobs and promote themselves too...So of course they are going to sneak their stuff in rotation over someone else's...and not everyone can be Dj Class lol...

O and download my mixtape..."No Place Like Home" to support dmv artists and djs that support them (www.missdjgemz.blogspot.com)(sorry for the plug).

Out of WKYS & WPGC I feel dat WPGC supports da most even tho they could still do a whole lot better honestly!!! If U focus U're energy more on pushing U're business, products, & promotions & less on airplay U will find it way easier 2 get U're shit played in da long run. WPGC has played every single dat De-U Records has ever attempted to push except for E One Letter's newest single joint "Success" *HINT* *HINT*...LOL!!! We've had our R&B artist played on WKYS too however right now rotation still remains beyond reach 4 us just like it is 4 da rest of ya'll...LOL!!! To be honest I think dat if GoGo didn't run dis town our stations would have more airtime 4 our DMV Hip-Hop, R&B, reggae, etc. but hey WTF do I know...LOL!!!

That commercial is funny a shit son. And it says something when the radio kind of taking shots at a local signed artist. Certain people at radio support and some don't. But that commercial is funny

It's so sad...I wanna say a lot...but I'll keep quiet...I'll let my artists Product, L.Pryce, Laura Song, Twindency, Carty Yeah, P-eZY, and everyone else that I work with or work for, make their noise...and I'll just nod when they said "I told you so"

Yeah fuck quicksilver, Whenever I travel out of town I notice that there are some stations that actually play their own local music. NOT DC SO FUCK PGC

good post. that commercial is not a good look for wale and that quicksilver song is funny as shit tho. remember when flex was playing that song he did wit lil john but be shitting on local rappers. niggas all for self at the end of the day

I hardly ever comment on stuff like this but this is and has been a big issue. I was out here trying to get on radio back in 2006 and 2007, luckily I smartened up and realized its a pipe dream. Took my act to New York and Atlanta and got out of town love. Like someone above me said, be about your business first...otherwise you'll be another starving artist in these DC streets.

On a semi-related note thanks to Judah and thanks to DJ Heat. Only two people I know that at least share the music and don't let bias get in the way.

I read this post and then went over to heats blogs and Quicksilver had a good response but they didnt address the Wale commercial. Now thats not journalism ok well maybe it is. lls

I agree with Deuce. If DC wasnt a Go Go city the other genres of music will get way more play. The radio stations dont respect artist until they show em something. Too many rappers going in the studio making what they think is a hit and just walking up ther thinking they gon play it. Then you got those who grind heavy but their music isnt commercial. Its raw hip hop. Radio stations across the US dont play raw hip hop like that. You want radio play, go in the studio, make a beat with bass, a simple catchy hook, and have fun with the verses. Making songs about how good you rap is not gonna cut it

DJ Nominal said...

I moved back to DMV after graduating and many asked would i try get on commercial radio, since I was a college radio Music Director, I said hell naw. Theres no freedom to play what I really want and I dont like being told what I need to play as a DJ. I believe in a good mix of commercial jams and up and coming artists... those including local artists.

Honestly I tell local artist now dont bother giving your music to commercial radio djs. Stick to college radio djs, online radio sites, and bloggers. At least you know your music will be considered and given a fair opportunity for rotation.

Cornbread said...

Wow, this whole thing is really getting crazy... at the day Payola is the only thing that matters... if you don't have Payola, you better have a good network... if you don't have either one, you just making music for yourself and your family... and I agree that from what I've seen, you can't "get on" by staying local... you gotta take your shyt somewhere else, get support, then come back

Ardamus said...

DJ Nominal just stated something I was about to say. As sad as it is that local radio won't support their own like they should, you have to connect to the internet for a work around. If dude works for the station like that and can get airplay on the show with no problems, you should already know what to expect sending your stuff in without the machine behind. And when I say "machine", I'm talking the major label push, payola (now its more so disguised because of new laws), and radio politics that play into it. Best thing to ever happen to an indie artist in terms of reaching people to a certain extent is the internet......and if there's radio on the internet that will allow you to submit their music however, you have to take advantage of that. And f the build up of that gets to the point where the local stations are upset they haven't supported, they will realize not to shit where they eat or piss where they drink. Simple as that. Like people have said before, WPFW definitely has kept it real.

Matter of fact, shoutouts to WPFW and Sirius XM radio. They've both given me support on the airwaves. Matter of fact, WPFW even edited my single to have played on their station. Greatly appreciate that.

DC RADIO IS FUCKED, just listen to that small minded burnt broad rain. Back in the day she shitted on clipse grinding when it first came out. Then she picked the New Boyz album over Cudis??? are you fucking kidding me, DC radio isn't diverse like other places DC radio is dick riding radio for crabs in a barrel. Artist like gordo brega or nando should have radio play.
