Open letter from OTB Managment.

First off I want to say thanks to my man Judah for providing a forum for myself and others to express our opinions and feelings. This is the true meaning of "SOCIAL media". I usually play the background but I had to let it be known in this instance because I see our new tools being misused by most and its sad.

So before you go "who the hell is this guy" just a bit about what I've done so far. I am a PR practitioner and was responsible (before we decided to go in different directions) for X.O.'s RealMatic mixtape being reviewed in the Washington Post, Washington City Paper and Washington Examiner on his release date in March last year. Trust me that wasn't easy having a mixtape reviwed in REAL newspapers. I still do PR for a couple of clients, not all music related either. But I digress, the thing I am here to speak on is the "Social Media Snobs" this includes the "ones that made it". The whole point of these internet tools was to establish and maintain communities of people that come together and exhange information.

I noticed while doing publicity for X.O. that certain blogs and certain cats would act in this "snobby" manner. They even went so far as to give somone they knew, propbably one of their boys credit for things I had submitted to them. This stuff doesn't bother me though, these are people "in the game" that think they are more important than everyone else. These are the "OLD HEADS" the dinosaurs that refuse to evolve. These are the guys that are pissed that they dont have the power of your success in their hands anymore. Let's remember that these "successful" people dont want us to control our success. Don't act like these guys, especially artists. YOU guys have the power to push each other, you can do a lot for free now. You dont need these majors to sign you and enslave you anymore. You have to make sure we keep the social in the media. establish connections and communities with your audience. Dont be a Twitter/Facebook/Myspace snob. Dont be a Twitter/Facebook/Myspace spammer either. I HATE receiving facebook messages telling me about events from people I dont know or care about. It's SPAM, if you actually took the time to connect with your community, these invites would be personal not a clone of some old promotion startegy that doesn't work anymore. It's all about the new, not the old ways of doing business, especially in music...

Nice article.
The good part about this is that the snobs end up exposing themselves and losing relevance.

Shout out to the blogs that have blackballed me and Lega-c's mixtapes and tracks, I still got in the City Paper lol

if your music is good it will get press. if it sucks, it wont. no matter who you pay to work your PR.

Sarah, myself and the others who supported XO in the REAL MEDIA did so because the project was dope.. straight up.

Just for clarification OTB used to be 4 now we are two. It was C. Keys, R.Glover, B. Lewis and myself but it's now just myself and B. Lewis my other brothers are still doing their thing and I dont want a false representation on their parts...

PJ, I agree with you, but you have to realize that's what makes you and Sarah and other journalists like you dope. I will support you in whatever you do because I know you write for the love not for the politics. Dope music is dope music and thats what should get the press. I agree 100% brother...

@igotit4free I dont get the relevance of what you're saying, how would I be a snob for not caring about something or someone I dont know. That was my whole point, get to know your audience, engage with people and then it wont be a situation where youre asking people to care about something they dont know

@FreeHundreds you're proving my point man. Your opinion is your opinion and I respect everyone's thoughts, I was coming from a positive place with this post...

I'm actually not. This whole article was an oxymoron; you can't complain about trying to get your material posted by someone on their blog, and talk about how you get spam about music/events/stuff you don't care about. It works both ways. Blogs are still apart of "social media", so it falls in the same categorical boundary as a Twitter/FB/MSPCE.

Me, I'm an 18 y.o. college student putting together his own college tour for the local artists who aren't X.O.'s and Ra's, and who don't get the exposure that they deserve...so I wouldn't know of these "old heads" you speak of. The real have been messing with me so far, and I'll keep it that way. So!,

RivalFrontier college tour October 2010! Hit me up for details, still taking musical submissions.

@FreeHundreds, good luck with that. only an 18 year old could survive on that shit.
