JusPaul's Bio

Paul "JusPaul" Spires, is a multitalented singer-songwriter, performer and event host. He is currently a recording artist with Oy Boyz Records, the lead male vocalist with legendary, grammy-nominated jazz/funk band, The Blackbyrds as well as founding member of DC-based rap group, TopShelf Starz. This multitalented singer-songwriter holds his own as a solo artist and also brings "the voice" to collaborations through his signature vocal stylings.

JusPaul began his semi-professional musical endeavors with competition winning performances in middle school as a battle rapper and freestyle artist. He won competitions against upper classman and older rappers with recognition from popular WPGC-FM DJs Flexx and Rane. He went on to collaborate with local singer, Devante Gardner, performing at many festivals and events throughout the DC Metropolitan area for several years. At the same time, he co-founded Topshelf Starz, a rap group with classmates from Washington DC’s Anacostia High School. TopShelf built a following in local clubs, festivals and events throughout the DMV as well as other U.S. cities including The Black Family Reunion on the National Mall, WPGC FM musical showcases, Diamond Xcel Showcases, and A&R Hookup Tours to name a few.

After completing high school and attending community college, he continued to work with one of his music mentors, Keith Killgo, which led to his becoming lead male vocalist with The Blackbyrds in 2011. The group re-formed and released its first studio album in decades, “Gotta Fly.” The release included Track 1: “I Need Your Love” with JusPaul on lead vocals. The band subsequently went on a European tour in 2012 which included performances in France, London, Germany and Spain. JusPaul has performed with the group stateside at Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club, THEARC WDC (Donald Byrd Tribute Concert), HR-57 Jazz Club (WDC), Blues Alley and many local festivals.

For the next few years, JusPaul continued performing extensively with The Blackbyrds and Topshelf Starz. He then parlayed his musical talents into his workplace as a lead facilitator with  nationally recognized youth organization, Metro Teen AIDS. His vocal talents coupled with his leadership skills helped grow the organization’s “Freestyle Center” and “Freestyle Fridays” into an integral tool in promoting HIV/AIDS prevention/ awareness as well as youth educational development.

In 2013, he took his professional music endeavors to the next level as a solo artist and signed with Oy Boyz Records, recording, performing and collaborating as a solo artists and with label mates and many other artists. His vocal talents, writing skills on hooks and vibrant stage presence have become sought-after in the music community.

In May, 2014, Oy Boyz Records presented his self-titled mixtape release, "JusPaul." The “JusPaul” EP’s hit singles "Red Cups," "Cherry Blossom," and "Too Turnt" received positive coverage on several hip hop blogs including The Source.com, EliteDC.com, HipHopSince1987, World Star Hip Hop and AllHipHop. JusPaul was also recently featured on 93.9 WPGC-FM's "DMV Spotlight" with DJ Mr. Peter Parker and special guest artist on several internet radio shows promoting his mixtape and his musical endeavors. His recent performances include a release tour as well as performances at The King of Diamonds (Miami, Florida); SOB's NYC (Faces in the Crowd Showcase); The Howard Theatre (WDC);  Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club (The Blackbyrds); and Up and Up Open Mic (JusPaul Jam Session). His singles and collaborations can be found on multiple platforms including LiveMixtapes, iTunes, ReverbNation, SoundCloud.

JusPaul’s musical artistry is unlimited and undefined by generic musical genres -- giving rise to his stage moniker and the only true description that fits -- JusPaul.
