by grinding it out yourself to get noticed enough to be picked to perform or get on events like this. it ain't hard, joe, but it IS work. i really started gettin on events and gaining a name heavy THIS year, and i'm 3 years into really pushing into this DMV scene serious, almost 22 years old. if you lookin for an easy way in though, you won't, so either be ready to grind or just don't bother with this rap game. that's the most honest shit i could tell you, as a fellow artist. be ready to TRULY grind or don't bother trying. it ain't for the lazy or the faint-hearted.; December 5, 2009 at 6:42 PM

The organizers and the rappers of open mic events treat these events like there secret socialites. Its like once your in you cant get out and if you want in you have to get a gang initiation to do sooo...come on guyss.. i see this on here and with my own eyes when i attend.

Its a lose lose situation for both the open mic and non open mic artist. Let me tell you why,
The rappers that go to these ciphers (which seems to be the same 2 dozen every two weeks) are:
1)Rapping to Rappers 2)Not gaining any REAL (NEW) fans (may even lose some) or Stronger ground in the market 3)Not making any real show money or money at all 4) Not touring not even locally
5)There Internet grind isn't as strong as it could be.6) Fans and new comers get tired of seeing the same faces,voices and beats

With the non open mic artist it's just as bad and maybe worst in some cases
1)Doesnt know how to perform live
2)Has no fan base at all
3)Is always rejected for no real reason when
trying to perform at open mics (outkast)
4)Not making any real show money or money at all 5) Not touring not even locally
6)There internet grind isn't as strong as it could be.
7)NO ONE KNOWS YOU AT ALL!!! (the worst)
*And this the outcome if there internet game isn't tight*!!

Some non open mic artist i never seen live only on here are doing very well(JUST A VERY SMALL FEW)
And some open mic artist I've seen are doing very well (JUST A SMALL FEW)

The Point of this long post is that every real artist from the DMV could be doing alot better if you all would stop alienating each other.; December 5, 2009 at 9:31 PM

to see it as only that is a very limited view. if you think open mics alone are deciding who's grinding in this area, you ain't hip to even half of what's going on with the key players in the DMV. if you're hitting open mics, yes, it does get you more seasoned in performing live, but let's be real...i still have a relevance here, and i haven't been to an open mic in months. as far as internet presence, people are really only attacking local blogs and MySpace. there's more online than just that. local open mics and websites are just where to start at. i'm on here, but i'm also featured on national and international blogs like 2dopeboyz.com, illRoots.com, OnSmaash.com, DCtoBC.com, etc. these are sites that are XXL Magazine's favorite websites list. they get hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of views. start here, then get there. it takes nothing more than a professional introductory email and quality music. that's it. as far as shows, people need to stop trying to keep it here. hit these open mics and get your performance skills up, then look for places OUTSIDE of here to perform. do some shows in NYC, ATL, etc. sites like ReverbNation.com make that EASY to do if you use the artist tools they provide. the point is, there is no hand-outs in this game. you gotta find your avenues and grind it out at the end of the day, because complaining gets you nothing but an angry heart and an empty hand. earn what you want. make yourself known. convince the world you deserve your spot. Judah was there in Philly at The Roots Picnic after i got off stage from rhyming with Amanda Diva, which was completely unplanned, but i jumped on an open opportunity and made it happen. at the end of it all, remember these 4 words...open your own doors. It's as simple as that. If you really want to be heard, you WILL find a way.

Work as hard as you can at whatever your passion is and you will always be recognized. All those people at those events "seem" like they are alienating you when they are really just recognizing each others hard work.

Great example:

E-Minah was just some kid that I barely knew...until...he showed up to every event we did, helped out, participated, stayed in contact with us, ended up in studio sessions, etc. His effort, skill, and willingness to grind is what makes him a viable option for Inner Loop Records.

I (personally) would never put effort into another man that wouldn't put that same amount of effort into himself. Don't ever go into these things looking for a handout.
