Not at all because real talk 99% of us is nobodys, and that's where we'd all stay if we put up barriers to working with each other.

Shout out to Mag, he does features free and quick, but he keeps murdering me on my own tracks lol

fuck no

wale
tabi
raheem
marky

only people doing anything major so of course they should charge...

XO, RAtheMc and DonJuan get honorable mentions

For studio time yes...because everyone may not have access to recording right away...

KT said...

this is a bizness, if you want them, u have to give them what they are asking for! I dont charge for features (GET AT ME...LOL) but at the same time you cant expect for Wale to get on a track with somebody just because they are from the dmv when he can get paid. For Ex: Chances are the dmv artist who pays for a Wale or Tabi feature are gonna promote that track more than any other track on their respective resumes. Now why would they get on a track with someone for free when they are just gonna try to use their names for exposure??? they should atleast get something in return. IT CANT ALWAYS BE A CHARITY!!!

IMO, FEATURES SHOULD BE DONE OUT OF CHEMISTRY AND THE LOVE OF THE CRAFT...NOT MONEY...ESPECIALLY AROUND HERE!!!

WELL...WHEN ARTISTS FROM THIS AREA HIT ME FOR COLLABS ON MYSPACE, I CHECK OUT THEIR PAGE, VIEWS, SONG PLAYS ECT.

IF I HAVENT HEARD OF EM, IF THEY DONT SOUND GOOD...YES I TELL THEM I CHARGE.

$100 FOR 16'S
$75 FOR 12'S

NOW THAT AINT EVEN REAL MONEY YA DIG? BUT MY TIME IS WORTH SOMETHING...AND IF IM GONNA SPEND THE TIME RECORDING MY VERSE, EMAILING IT, MIXING IT, ECT...SOMEHOW I GOTTA BE COMPENSATED

ALSO, WHEN I GIVE THE PRICE...MOST ARTISTS BE LIKE "COME ON FOLKZ...YOU GONNA CHARGE ME?"

WELL SLIM IF U AINT GOT $100 YOU CAN THROW AT ME AS A WAY OF SAYING THANK U FOR BEING ON YOUR SONG...FUCK YOU FOR REAL CAUSE YOU HAVE NO INTEREST IN INVESTING IN YOUR MUSIC

I also feel what Folkz is saying.

There are some situations/people that you'd do it free for.

Then you got others who....errr you may not be so ready to work it. So you tax them to either make them go away or show you that they're serious.

A lot of time can be wasted if you work with/for any and everybody.

I agree wit Folkz & Tork cause at da end of da day time is money. Once I learned how 2 make at least $100 a day in CD sales or $50 an hour in studio time without even touch'n a mic it seemed weird 4 me 2 pay another rapper 4 a verse regardless of where he's from. I know I will eventually but I gotta feel like it's worth my investment.

WHAT FOLKZ YOU CHARGE NEGRO (U KNOW WHAT IM SAYING) PLEASE FOR WHAT?THATS LAME FOLKZ.NO RAP ARTIST FROM THE DMV SHOULD CHARGE... NO ONE HAS THE BUZZ YET..EXCEPT WALE BUT EVEN PAYING HIM SEEMS CRAZY, BUT AT THE SAME TIME YOU KNOW IF YOU GET WALE ON A VERSE RIGHT NOW THAT SHIT IS GOING MAKE ALL THE SITES ASAP. RAHEEM MOST OF THE TRACKS HE JUMPS ON THEY DONT DO MUCH, NOT BECAUSE OF HIM I JUST DONT THINK HE BEEN FEATURED ON THE RIGHT SONG WITH A RAP ARTIST.
J. HOLIDAY NOW THATS WHO YOU WANT TO PAY HE CAN TURN YOUR SINGLE INTO A HIT.
RA, X.O., MARKY, DON JUAN - NAW NOT YET THEY KNOWN IN DMV(NYC) BUT EVERYWHERE ELSE IT IS DIFFERENT..ITS LIKE PUTTING A UNKNOWN ARTIST ON THE TRACK WITH A UNKNOWN ARTIST.IT WOULD BE A WASTE OF MONEY NOT UNLESS YOU WORKED OUT A GOOD DISTRIBUTION PLAN FOR THE SONG.

SECOND NONE OF THESE CATS HAVE SINGLES..WHEN I SAY SINGLES I MEAN RADIO SPINNING SINGLES.

NOTE: ALL OF THESE ARTIST ARE GREAT ,BY 2010 WILL BE HARD TO GET ON A TRACK, BUT RIGHT NOW THERE GRINDING.

I just want all of ya'll to know this is why the DMV is ALL fucked up! You got artist with million dollar deals who do stuff for FREE for their people but niggaz who AINT DID SHIT!!!!Want you to pay...EVERYBODY DESERVES TO BE COMPENSATED NO DOUBT BUT...If Lil Wayne go to Rick Ross of Young Jeezy they gone tell Lil Wayne O no problem homie me fee is....HELL2DANAW!!!!!WOWWWW!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

I understand what some of yall are saying but the way I look at it is like this for example when Tork says ill knock a joint out quick for him....I know the type of work ethic Tork puts into doing what he does and promoting the record after its made so im giving him a verse in exchange for the promo I get as a result of him working the record around...now on the same note if I give a dude a verse and he dont do shit wit the joint he wont get another one...Im not gon charge him Im just not gon work with him again....thats my take on it...and nobody in this area has produced any platinum or gold plaques as to where having them on your track equals instant success...maybe some local attention but even putting Wale on a song will not get you from nobody to household name so NOBODY (with all due respect to all) is worth the money!

First off I love this topic Ju ... I asked a DMV artist for a collab (You shall remain nameless) and this nigga had the nerve to tell me he charge. My first reaction was who the fuck is you? I call it networking. Personally I wanna collab wit every UNSIGNED artist in the DMV that has talent. Why can't niggas get together and make good music. **Exception ... If I send you a song, and you gotta pay studio time to record, I can understand why you'd want to be paid ... But come on, how long it take a nigga to knock out 16 bars?? I think some niggas in the DMV got way to big egoes and it'll forever hold us back. If you ain't signed to a major label I ain't payin you. Good points though Tork and Mag.

I do not feel an artist should pay for a feature unless it is going to be for a commercial release or something they are going to sell at shows, streets, etc..It is an investment and most of all if you pay an artist then make sure they sign a release that establishes they have knowledge you will sell the shit or put in on the radio..I dont think charging or paying is a good solution for artists who are trying to lift up their area..the talent should be shared and even the wack no name artists can serve a purpose of promoting you to maybe a group of individuals who are not really familiar with you..Just my thoughts..Its a fuckin recession so if you are an artist who charges then knock 50% off yo damn price!!! LOL

never. i never charge for anything. and people ask me all the time. phone calls, MySpace, Twitter...people ask what i charge for verses, hooks, songs, mixtape drops...i never charge, man. it's a hip-hop thing for me, man...i'm doing this music for the art of it anyway. that's not to say i don't need the money, but i'm not gonna enjoy the bread as much. i'm just Lyriciss right now, in my mind...i'm not no major figure. for me to have someone throw big bread at me to talk on their tape in a drop is fuckery...i couldn't even feel honorable doing that to an artist that really knows no better.

Peace & Hip-Hop
Lyriciss

P.S. i ain't payin y'all bammas shit for no collabs either. like i said, it's a hip-hop thing for me. either you about it or you can kick rocks.

i wont pay a nigga that rap cuz i can do dat on my own but if i need a good singer 2 do a hook its all good you gotta pay 4 what you want sometimes.....

1. I HAVE NEVER ASKED SOMEONE WHO IS NOT A TOPP DOGG FOR A COLLAB. ANYONE IVE EVER WANTED TO WORK WITH IS ALREADY A TOPP DOGG OR A TOPP DOGG AFFILLIATE.

RATED R, DON JUAN, SOLO, MARIA J, MO BETTA, THE COMMITTEE, 30/30, LADY VENOM...NEED I SAY MORE?

SO I HAVE NEVER BEEN CHARGED

2. RAPPERS ASK ME ALL DAY FOR FEATURES. SENDING ME MP3'S OF TERRIBLE FRUITY LOOPS BEATS OR EVEN INDUSTRY BEATS. NOW YOU WANT ME TO WRITE A 16, HIT A STUDIO, MIX IT, DO ALL THAT....FOR FREE?

WHY?

I COULD BE READING. PLAYING CHESS. FUCKING SOMEBODIES BABYMOTHER. SHOPPING.

WHY SHOULD I WASTE MY TIME WHEN IM NOT EVEN ENJOYING THE SONG ITSELF?

THAT MEANS IM PROVIDING A SERVICE.

AND WHEN YOU PROVIDE SERVICES YOU GET PAID FOR IT.

SIMPLE AS THAT.

AND FOR ALOT OF YALL WHO KEEP STRESSING THAT YALL NEVER CHARGE, NEVER WILL CHARGE, AND NEVER THINK ABOUT CHARGING.....THAT IS BECAUSE YOU CANT. LOL

IVE GOTTEN AWAY WITH IT.

I HAVE DONE ABOUT 4 OR 5 FEATURES FOR $$$$

AND TRUST ME...IT FELT GOOD. MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE A REAL ARTIST

TRY IT SOMETIME

Ay ya'll can charge people all ya'll want but dont be crying 5 years from now when the DMV is still....NOT ON!!!When all these other regions jumped into the game it was because they all supported each other(not financially either). If you look at the industry you will see its built on relationships. So FOLKS don't be upset when that lil bama dude you tried to charge when you was buzzin is signed or is in a position to help you...He's gonna remember how you treated him in the past.

I have yet to hit up a DMV artist for a collab...but I think I may soon...hoffa

if someone is talented enough that you want to work with them, they're probably talented enough to make a dope song that you can both exploit.

my favorite question to ask for people who charge for beats or features is, "so is this a work for hire? an advance on future publishing? what?"

when people respond with something amorphous like "you're paying me for my time", i respond "well, you pay me for my time that i put into the track too and guess what, surprise surprise, my fee is the same as yours, so we're both doing it for free".

I wouldnt charge nobody grinding like me... At the same time, I think its important for the person to bring something to the table in the discussion, ( yo, ill promote you at my shows or ill help sell your cds on my website) something fam. Bottom line, we all need to bring something to the table when networking.

@PIR:

I REMEMBER WHEN YALL USED TO HIT THAT JOINT BACK IN THE DAY!

AND TOPP DOGG ALWAYS SHOW LOVE TO YA...NOW JUST AS AN EXAMPLE....IF YOU OR ANYONE IN UR SQUAD ASKED ME TO HOP ON A SONG...WELL...U ALREADY KNOW I WOULDNT SAY SHIT ABOUT $$$...AND NO OTHER TOPP DOGGS WOULD CHARGE YOU EITHER...EXCEPT MAYBE JUAN CAUSE HE SIGNED NOW...

ITS JUST ABOUT BEING SELECTIVE WITH YOUR CRAFT

@THE BLOGGERS:

THE REASON CERTAIN BRANDS LIKE CHROME HEARTS, CARTIER AND LUIS VUITTON MAINTAIN THEIR REPUTATION IS BECAUSE THEY ARE VERY SELECTIVE ABOUT WHAT RETAIL STORES CARRY THEIR PRODUCT. THIS ALLOWS THEM TO MAINTAIN THEIR EXLUSIVE IMAGE.

SOOO....IF AS A RAPPER U HOP ON EVERY WACK TRAKK ZSHARED TO UR MYSPACE INBOX BY A RAPPER U DONT KNOW OR HAVENT HEARD OF...

U DOWNGRADE YOUR VALUE

I never charge. For verses doing a verse or singing a hook. or even giving an exclusive track.

For beats tho, I may charge a lot if they are gonna make a lot of bread off, like a majorly distributed joint w/ chances of probably selling over 100,000 records because of course i want my piece of the pie.

But for a song that is like a mixtape joint or a cd that's probably not gonna do over 50,000than i'll make it free.

Anything in-between will be very cheap tho.

yeah Judah, why do you be charging so much for people to work with you?

Carty-Yeah said...

NIGGAS CAN PAY FOR WEED...BLUNTS..E-PILLS...GUNS CIGARETTES...MORE BLUNTS...BLACK N MILDS LOL....NIKE BOOTS...JORDANS...PUSSY...CLOTHES

I MEAN I CAN GO ON AND ON.

ALOT OF THESE IN WHICH ARE BAD FOR YOU AND COULD KILL YOU OR GET YOU KILLED....BUT YALL WONT PAY FOR A VERSE TO SAVE YOUR LIFE...SHIT IS CRAZY...IM JUST GIVING A OVERAL OPINION...NOT BIASED OR NOTHIN...I FEEL LIKE ALL THE MORE SERIOUS ARTIST/PRODUCERS SHOULD WORK 2GETHER AND BUILD WITH NO FEE ESPECIALLY IF THE TALENT IS UNDENIABLE I MEAN WHY NOT...BUT YOU DO HAVE THE "TIMEWASTERS"

TIMEWASTERS-(WACK ASS RAPPERS, NOT SERIOUS, JUST DO IT CUZ THEY ARE BORED)

AND THEY AREN'T REALLY SERIOUS ABOUT THIS MUSIC SHIT...SO LIKE FOLKZ SAID YOU MIGHT HAVE TO GET TAXED FOR WASTING TIME...CUZ I HATE THAT SHIT..I DONE SO MANY FEATURES FOR PEOPLE OVER THE YEARS AND I STILL AINT HEARD THEM JOINTS...I COULD HAVE USED THEM VERSES FOR MYSELF YA DIG?....I UNDERSTAND BOTH SIDES THOUGH....THE PEOPLE THAT CHARGE AND THE PEOPLE WHO DONT.

YOU YOU YOU YOU ALREADY KNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!!
