As a lifelong native of the Northwest
section of Washington DC, commonly known as “Uptown,” Chico’s commitment
to his stomping grounds is undeniable. “Every man has his own path,” he
says. “I represent the guy who’s determined and I come from nothing.”
Needless
to say, Chico MDA was raised by the streets, as neither of his parents
were able to devote much time to his upbringing. As a result, he was
left to fend for himself and learned the art of hustling at an early age
(11 years old).
From juvenile
detention centers, to group homes and various adult facilities, he
eventually earned his stripes on and off the streets – in and out of the
system “There were consequences,” he says. “There were lessons that I
learned and ultimately, a cost for my lifestyle.”
At
the age of sixteen, Chico was sentenced to 40 years in prison. Upon
losing his first appeal, the devout Christian leaned on his spiritual
sensibilities, developing an even stronger relationship with God.
Unsurprisingly, he also turned to music as an outlet to release the
anger, frustration and venom that’d built inside him.
In
time, Chico was granted another appeal and the court ruled in his
favor. After all the prayers, steadfast faith and visions of life
outside of prison walls, he was released a month before his 21st
birthday.
To date after his
release, Chico has released 2 mixtapes, shared the stage with Jim
Jones,French Montana and has features from Bizzy Bone, Kidd Kidd and
others for his SMV3 (Street Music Vol#3 LP) due out this summer with
"Frank Diggy Celebration" being the 1st & lead single.
