Georgetown University student mugged at gunpoint says he is unable to criticize attackers 'from my perch of privilege.

A student at Georgetown University wrote in an op-ed piece that he was 'Not at all' shocked that a recent mugging he suffered at gunpoint took place.
Student: Oliver Friedfeld, pictured, wrote the opinion piece which sparked a debate among online commenters
Student: Oliver Friedfeld, pictured, wrote the opinion piece which sparked a debate among online commenters
Senior Oliver Friedfeld said in his piece, 'I Was Mugged, And I Understand Why,' that he questioned his own ability to criticize his attackers, citing his 'perch of privilege.'
The op-ed was published November 18 in Georgetown's student newspaper The Hoya - and picked up by several media outlets this week.
As of this writing, Friedfeld's piece has 142 comments on the student newspaper's website - a number of which debate whether or not the author is victim-blaming for the crime, while others debate the idea of privilege.
Friedfeld wrote of the encounter 'Last weekend, my housemate and I were mugged at gunpoint while walking home from Dupont Circle. The entire incident lasted under a minute, as I was forced to the floor, handed over my phone and was patted down.'
He continued 'And yet, when a reporter asked whether I was surprised that this happened in Georgetown, I immediately answered: "Not at all." It was so clear to me that we live in the most privileged neighborhood within a city [Washington, D.C.] that has historically been, and continues to be, harshly unequal.'
Frieden revealed in the op-ed that he did not view the muggers as 'bad people' - and that instead of the various opportunities he'd received in life, wrote that, 'I'd venture to guess that our attackers have had to experience things I've never dreamed of.'
'Who am I to stand from my perch of privilege, surrounded by million-dollar homes and paying for a $60,000 education, to condemn these young men as "thugs?"' he argued. 'It’s precisely this kind of "otherization" that fuels the problem.'
Friedfeld wrote that though there is always the possibility of choice, 'it's a lot easier for me to choose good than it may be for them to.'
The college student also dismissed the idea of an increased police presence being helpful; he wrote 'Police protect us by keeping those "bad people" out of our neighborhood, and I’m grateful for it. And yet, I realize it’s self-serving and doesn't actually fix anything.'

At the end of his column for The Hoya, Friedfeld argued that people ought to acclimate themselves to crimes taking place.
He wrote, 'As young people, we need to devote real energy to solving what are collective challenges. Until we do so, we should get comfortable with sporadic muggings and break-ins. I can hardly blame them. The cards are all in our hands, and we’re not playing them.'
Friedfeld did not immediately return a request for comment from MailOnline.

Sic Itur Ad Astra ("Thus do we reach the stars") – The Motto For Richmond, Capital City of Virginia.

To standout as an artist in today's turbulent Hip-Hop climate, full of purchased cosigns, backroom deals and other barriers against fresh innovation, there remain some acts worth their salt who won't need such maneuvers. Meet Dark Wave – a duo consisting of Richmond, Virginia natives Christopher Lakes and Matty.

Richmond has made a splash on the Hip-Hop map in times past. However, Dark Wave isn't resting on past rap glory as they seek to make their own unique impact on a scene constantly eager for the next big thing.

Christopher Lakes and Matty, soloists in their own right, have already crafted potent music on their own. Together, they usher in what they call their “Dark Sound” and there are few words that can explain. For the group, Dark Wave is more than just music, which is something the duo explains in detail.

“#DarkWave is our movement. We feel as if we're the voice for the youth and that we have the best upcoming project any artist has had. We want to make our stamp in the game and look forward to establishing our Dark Sound. We want to be remembered as a couple of the hardest working artists the industry has ever seen, in all aspects of the game.”

The Dark Sound is better experienced than heard. Ambient, aggressive, melodic, often all at once, the Dark Sound surrounds the listener and seizes upon their entire being. Dark Wave is confident that if their music is given a chance, it will raise your consciousness with immediacy.

Christopher Lakes and Matty have been working quietly behind the scenes to craft their best work. With youth and talent on their side, Dark Wave will undoubtedly shift the balance in their favor. While fans are force-fed mediocrity masked by big hooks and false features, Dark Wave takes a far more sincere approach with their art.

After taken a brief hiatus to master their craft Virginia collective BreezePark, known for their breakout cuts “Time Flies”“Watch Me Get It” and“Thrilla”, returns with their latest audio contribution entitled “F.W.U.” (Fuck With Us).

The record serves as just one example of the progression the group has made after opening up for Pharrell earlier this year in addition to headlining a sold-out show of their own at The NorVA a few months ago.

@C4Hunit - What They Want

C4 was born Carlton Fields in Washington DC and raised in Maryland.  Known for his hustle mentality and crazy sense of humor, it was clear he was unique at a young age. Though he had no aspirations of being a musical artist as a kid, he has loved music since a very young age. "I love how music can relate to different situations in your every day life whether good or bad” He says. Once introduced to recording music by his friends, C4 seemed to have a natural talent and a distinct delivery. He has been a Hip Hop connoisseur for years listening, learning the craft and patiently waiting to tell his story. With his previous two mix tapes "High Speed Livin" & "Stacks On The Grill", C4 proves that he is ready to ignite the music scene.

As a child C4 was exposed to a variety of music that was continuously played in his house by his mother, such as The Isley Brothers, Mary J Blige, TLC, R. Kelly and many others. His major hip hop influences are UGK, Jay-Z, T.I., Kanye West, Young Jeezy, Rick Ross, Young Money and many more. "I'm a fan of great music that relates to my life" He says “creating music is the closest thing to therapy i know”

C4 has taken his experiences as well as his knowledge and focused them on doing something positive with his life. He is using his hustle/business minded swagger to rise to new heights and says he's not looking back. “Having a good time doing something you love is what its all about” he says “I'm just enjoying life. The success as well as the struggle”. With his new Mix Tape “Work Related" coming soon he is eager to leave his mark on the music world. Stay tuned!!

@aarashmusic - One Day (Mixtape)

"One Day" is AA.RASH's first mixtape in over three and a half years and fourth mixtape overall. He has spent the last three years working on his craft and the past year working on material for this tape. The project consists of eight songs all based off life experiences he's been thru in the past few years transitioning from a teenager to a young adult. While songs like "No More" and "If I Die Today" deal with the frustrations of life and trying to make your way in this world, songs like "No Typical Love Song" and "Have You Ever Loved" deal with matters of the heart and the feelings of love. Overall, the tape is well balanced and a fresh start for the young man looking to make his mark as an artist.
